President of the Supreme Judicial Council: We will hold accountable those whose hands are stained with the blood of innocents and there is no place on Iraqi soil for a criminal to escape punishment.

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Dr. Faiq Zaidan, affirmed that the crimes committed against the Yazidis are a deep wound in the heart of the nation—one that shook its conscience and the conscience of all humanity. He reiterated the judiciary’s unwavering commitment to achieving justice and holding accountable all those whose hands are stained with the blood of innocents.

During the commemoration conference of the genocide against the Yazidi community—organized by the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation in collaboration with the American University of Baghdad—Judge Zaidan stated:

Today we gather on a painful anniversary, a remembrance of a deep wound in the heart of the nation—a horrific crime committed against our brothers from the Yazidi community, which shook the conscience of Iraq and indeed the conscience of all humanity.”

He added:

In those dark days, we witnessed mass killings, forced displacement, and violations of human dignity. Thousands of martyrs fell, and thousands more disappeared—either missing or imprisoned. The survivors continue to live with the pain of loss and the bitterness of tragedy. This catastrophe was not merely an assault on a specific group but an attack on our shared humanity, our values, and our collective existence.”

Judge Zaidan continued:

As the Supreme Judicial Council recalls these painful moments, it renews today its firm commitment to achieving justice and holding accountable all those whose hands are stained with the blood of innocents. The law knows no exceptions, justice tolerates no leniency, and there is no place on Iraqi soil for a criminal to escape punishment.”

He also pointed out:

The National Center for International Judicial Cooperation has played a pivotal role in archiving and preserving evidence related to these crimes and in documenting the testimonies of survivors and victims according to precise standards that ensure the integrity of judicial files.”

He emphasized:

This exceptional effort is not only aimed at prosecuting the perpetrators but also at preserving the rights of future generations and ensuring that these crimes remain alive in the memory of justice. The center also works to strengthen cooperation with countries and international organizations to pursue criminals wherever they may be and prevent them from escaping punishment.”
