On Monday, Syrian-American U.S. Congressman Ibrahim Hamada met with interim Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa in Damascus to discuss the issue of normalization with Israel and the delivery of aid to Sweida.
According to a statement from the congressman’s office, Hamada conducted a six-hour visit to Damascus during which he met with President Al-Sharaa to address humanitarian and political matters, including efforts to repatriate the remains of American citizens and ways to facilitate aid delivery to Sweida Province.
The statement added that the meeting included discussions on the repatriation of the remains of American activist Kayla Mueller to her family in Arizona, as well as calls to establish a safe humanitarian corridor to deliver medical and humanitarian aid to Sweida. It also confirmed that the two discussed pathways for Syria to normalize relations with Israel and join the Abraham Accords.
The meeting also emphasized that achieving comprehensive security and peace for all communities within Syria is key to building a unified Syria that reflects the country’s diverse social fabric. It further expressed support for steps taken by former President Donald Trump’s administration to ease certain sanctions to facilitate reconstruction while maintaining congressional oversight of Syria’s commitments to the United States.
The visit comes amid growing regional and international engagement on Syria and efforts to reestablish diplomatic and humanitarian ties. As of now, no official comment has been issued by the Syrian presidency regarding the meeting.
