On Monday, Turkey’s Interior Ministry reported the casualty toll from the earthquake that struck Balıkesir Province in western Turkey on Sunday, stating that it resulted in one death and 29 injuries.
According to Turkish news agency Anadolu, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the sole fatality was an elderly man who died during a rescue attempt. The condition of the injured is described as “non-critical.”
The minister confirmed that the earthquake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and had an epicenter 11 kilometers below the surface, based on data from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
AFAD also reported that the country experienced aftershocks ranging from 4.0 to 4.6 in magnitude, causing widespread concern among residents. Local authorities have taken immediate measures to assess damage and provide assistance to those affected.
As rescue and relief teams continue operations in the impacted areas, Turkish officials have urged citizens to remain cautious and stay away from damaged buildings.
