Israeli police revealed on Wednesday that they are investigating a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, allegedly led by an Israeli activist residing in Tel Aviv. Authorities confirmed that the woman had been arrested.
According to a statement from the police spokesperson, the investigation was conducted by the Serious and International Crimes Unit (Yachbal) in cooperation with the General Security Service (Shin Bet). It focused on a woman in her seventies living in Tel Aviv, known for her involvement in anti-government protests.
Authorities suspect that the woman expressed her intent to assassinate the prime minister and actively sought to carry out the plan using an explosive device. She allegedly contacted several protest activists in an attempt to obtain weapons and researched details related to the Prime Minister’s security protocols.
At the request of the investigative unit, the court lifted a publication ban on details of the case. However, the ban on releasing the suspect’s name and address remains in effect, in accordance with her lawyer’s request.
In the first political response to the case, opposition leader Yair Lapid issued a statement saying, “I strongly condemn any attempt to harm Prime Minister Netanyahu. Anyone who has tried—or might try—to hurt him must be brought to justice with the utmost severity.”
