The additional tariffs on U.S. imports announced by President Donald Trump last week came into effect today, Wednesday.
After the first round of comprehensive tariffs of no less than 10% on imports from most of the United States' trading partners took effect on Saturday, higher tariffs linked to trade deficits were implemented at midnight (04:00 GMT Wednesday morning) on more than 60 countries.
The U.S. government calculated the tariffs for each country based on factors including trade deficits, subsidies, and currency control. For example, imports from Germany and other European Union countries to the United States will face new tariffs of 20%.
Through his tariff policy, Trump aims to boost domestic production while persuading foreign trade partners to make concessions. His initiative has caused significant disruptions in stock markets.
Several countries have announced countermeasures, and the trade war could lead to a major crisis for the global economy.
