The presidency announced that it has filed a lawsuit before the Federal Supreme Court against Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, based on the recommendation of the legal agent, in defense of the salaries of Kurdistan Region employees.
Hawry Tawfiq, Director General of the Department of Relations and International Organizations, explained in a press conference that the lawsuit was registered on January 20, but the announcement was made now due to the teachers' strike in tents and the deteriorating health conditions of some of them, in addition to protests and the boycott of classes in some areas.
Tawfiq confirmed that the lawsuit targets the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance and calls for the Federal Supreme Court to issue an urgent precautionary order for the continuous and uninterrupted disbursement of salaries to employees in the Kurdistan Region. The lawsuit also demands that technical procedures such as auditing and oversight not be considered factors in delaying salary payments.
Tawfiq pointed out that the lawsuit includes a request for the court to obligate the House of Representatives to amend paragraph (c) of Article 12 of the budget law concerning the cost of producing a barrel of oil in the region, adding that this paragraph was amended in recent days by the Iraqi Parliament.
