Al-Sharaa Praises Pope Francis and Says Christians Are an Integral Part of Syria.

The leader of the Syrian Interim Administration, Ahmed Shar', expressed his appreciation and admiration for Pope Francis, affirming that Christians are not a minority in Syria, as they are an integral part of the country and have played an important role in its history.

The Vatican newspaper "L'Osservatore Romano" published an article written by the Deputy Custodian of the Holy Land, Franciscan priest Ibrahim Faltas, following his meeting with Shar' in Damascus.

Father Faltas wrote that the new Syrian leader, Ahmed Shar', responded in this way to a question about his view of Christian communities in Syria, particularly the tasks carried out by the "Custody of the Holy Land" in the region.

Faltas confirmed that al-Jolani used this meeting to express his appreciation and respect for Pope Francis, describing him as a true man of peace. He highly valued the Pope's calls and actions for peace and for the benefit of the people.

Faltas added that the meeting with Shar' was a private one, attended by two Franciscan priests. He formed the impression that Shar' is "a man open to dialogue, addressing changes that will bring stability to Syria and lead to democratic balances, with particular attention to the fundamental rights of the Syrian people.

Shar' assured his interlocutor that "the Syrian people have suffered for many years from the consequences of widespread corruption at various levels, with the majority of the population lacking basic services and growth, and political opponents being arrested and eliminated.

He added that he visited prisons lacking humane conditions, noting that divisions among Syrians led to conflicts.

Regarding the future of the Syrian people, Shar' confirmed that efforts are currently underway to achieve unity and stability, adding that the matter requires time, but he is confident that political and social stability in Syria will be achieved.

Faltas revealed that he discussed with Shar' the conditions of Syrians who were displaced due to the war, including many Christians who were forced to leave their land. He noted that "efforts are underway to bring back those who had to leave the country, reassuring that expatriates will return and Syrian Christians will practice their faith and beliefs in Syria.
