The Finnish Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that the last members of its forces will return from Iraq by the end of 2024, after participating in training Iraqi forces as part of the international coalition to combat ISIS.
The ministry's statement, as reported, mentioned that "ISIS has lost most of the territories it controlled, but it still poses a threat, requiring continued international efforts in combating terrorism.
The statement added, "Despite the end of Finland's participation in the operation, the impact of its efforts will remain tangible, as the training provided by Finnish forces has enhanced the capabilities of Iraqi security forces to protect their areas and ensure the safety of the population.
The statement explained that "with the partial stabilization of the situation in 2019, the role of Finnish forces transitioned from training to focusing on protection and advisory activities, with Finnish advisors working to develop the security capabilities of Iraqi forces at both the tactical and operational levels.
It noted that "Finnish forces have been highly respected by their international and local partners, with their professional performance and positive attitudes being a key support to efforts in stabilizing the region and defeating ISIS.
The statement emphasized that "despite the end of their participation in Operation Inherent Resolve, Finland continues to support Iraq through its contribution to the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), which aims to implement comprehensive and long-term reforms in the security sector in cooperation with local partners.
The statement concluded by highlighting that "Finnish advisors and experts have contributed over the years to developing the security sector in Iraq and the region, helping build stable and just institutions. Advisory activities will remain a key part of efforts to achieve regional stability, with Finland continuing its work under the NATO-led mission."
