The Egyptian Ministry of Environment announced on Sunday the death of a tourist and the injury of another in a shark attack at the Marsa Alam resort on the Red Sea.
The nationalities of the tourists have not been disclosed, and they have been admitted to Porto Ghalib Hospital.
The Ministry of Environment stated on its official Facebook page: "The Minister of Environment is following the shark attack incident in the northern Marsa Alam area, raising the readiness and immediate follow-up in the Red Sea reserves, and has issued directives to form an urgent committee to determine the causes of the incident.
It revealed that "the area will be closed, and swimming will be prohibited in the jetty area for two days starting from Monday.
In September of last year, a woman in Dahab on the Red Sea had her leg amputated as a result of a shark attack, and a Russian tourist was killed in the same year in a shark attack in Hurghada.
Environmental scientists fear unprovoked shark attack incidents, where sharks attack humans in their natural state without being provoked or experiencing hunger, which occur in several coastal countries around the world.
