The Wall Street Journal reported today, Friday, that President-elect Donald Trump's team is considering options, including airstrikes, to halt Iran's nuclear program.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that "President-elect Donald Trump is currently considering available options to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon, including the possibility of launching preemptive airstrikes, a move that would break the old policy of containing Tehran through diplomacy and sanctions.
It added that "the option of a military strike on nuclear facilities is now under more serious review by some members of Trump's transition team, who are carefully studying the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime—an ally of Tehran—in Syria, the future of U.S. forces in the region, and Israel's destruction of Hezbollah and Hamas.
The American newspaper quoted officials in the transition team as saying that "Iran's weakened regional position and the recent revelation of Tehran's flourishing nuclear work have sparked sensitive internal discussions. However, all deliberations on this issue remain in their early stages.
The Wall Street Journal added that "President-elect Trump's advisors fear that economic pressures may not be sufficient to contain Tehran and are considering military action." It quoted two sources familiar with the details as saying that "Trump recently told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he is concerned Iran will engage in a nuclear program during his term."
