Peru's President Dina Boluarte's nose surgery has caused a political crisis this week, leading to calls for her resignation due to her failure to delegate responsibilities during the surgery.
Boluarte, 62, underwent the surgery in the summer of 2023. The local press and social media users have repeatedly mentioned it, but it was only officially confirmed on Tuesday during a parliamentary hearing with former Prime Minister Alberto Otárola.
Otárola told lawmakers investigating the matter that the president "informed me she would undergo a nose job... surgery on her nose, but due to breathing problems.
According to local media, the president had the surgery at a medical center in Lima without announcing it to the public or delegating her powers to Congress.
The former prime minister confirmed that the president performed her duties remotely during the recovery period. He emphasized that "there was no power vacuum during that period, as the surgery had no severe complications.
