The Russian news agency reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accepted an invitation from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to visit Russia today, Friday.
Pezeshkian and Putin held direct talks on the sidelines of an international conference in Turkmenistan.
The agency did not specify the expected date for the visit.
The meeting comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, where Israel is conducting a military operation in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.
Relations between Russia and Iran have significantly strengthened since Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine in 2022, and it is widely believed that Tehran is supplying Russia with weapons. The two countries are subject to Western sanctions.
The Kremlin mentioned earlier that they would discuss bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East.
Pezeshkian will also hold talks with Putin during a scheduled visit to Russia later this month to attend the BRICS summit.
